DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands which can then be converted into testosterone and estrogen. DHEA levels start decreasing from the age of 25 onwards in humans. By the age of 90, DHEA levels are roughly 5% of the DHEA levels at the age of 25. Many scientists believe that the decline of DHEA production by the adrenals may contribute to the physical and mental deterioration associated with aging.
Studies have shown that low levels of DHEA are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease in men. DHEA has also been shown to influence the serum lipid profile level in men by reducing total cholesterol and LDL levels, while improving HDL/LDL ratios. DHEA also exhibits anti-oxidant properties by inhibiting the oxidation of LDL (a major contributor to arteriosclerosis). Studies have also shown that DHEA inhibits the clumping together of blood platelets, promoting healthy blood flow.
DHEA plays a pivotal role in the anti-aging process. Studies have shown that DHEA helps to increase physical and physiological well-being in men and women who restore their DHEA levels to those found in young adults. DHEA replacement has also been shown to improve lean muscle mass, immune function, and quality of life in aging men and women. Low levels of DHEA have also been associated with Alzheimer's disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus, erectile dysfunction, and depression.
"Your access to DHEA is in jeopardy! The Senate is considering a bill, S. 1137, to classify DHEA as an anabolic steroid, adding it to the list of controlled substances and removing it from the market. Similar legislation is expected soon in the House of Representatives. Your immediate help is needed to keep this safe and effective dietary supplement legal and accessible."
