Green Tea (camellia sinensis) has long been used in Asia for its medicinal properties. The main constituents of green tea are polyphenols, carotenoids, and polysaccharides. The polyphenols in green tea are generally considered to be responsible for the anti-oxidant properties of green tea.
Catechins are the most active polyphenols in green tea, and in particular Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG). The polyphenols in green tea have been shown to have anti-carcinogenic,and anti-bacterial properties. Decaffinated green tea which is extracted for high levels of polyphenols is therefore the preferred form.
